Preventing Stroke
Stroke risk factors you CAN control or treat:
   * high blood pressure
   * tobacco use
   * diabetes mellitus
   * carotid or other artery disease
   * atrial fibrillation or other heart disease
   * a history of "mini strokes"
   * a high red blood cell count
   * sickle cell anemia
   * high blood cholesterol
   * physical inactivity
   * overweight and obesity
   * excessive alcohol intake
   * some illegal drugs
Stroke risk factors you CAN'T control or treat:
   * Age - Although younger people are not immune to      strokes, advanced age significantly raises your      stroke risk.
   * Sex - Each year more women than men have a      stroke. Women's risk rises sharply after      menopause, but it remains lower than men's in      the same age group.
   * Heredity - Some families have higher-than-     normal genetic risk of stroke. African Americans      are more likely to have high blood pressure than      Caucasians and tend to have strokes earlier in life      with more severe results.
