| Stroke risk factors you CAN control or treat: * high blood pressure * tobacco use * diabetes mellitus * carotid or other artery disease * atrial fibrillation or other heart disease * a history of "mini strokes" * a high red blood cell count * sickle cell anemia * high blood cholesterol * physical inactivity * overweight and obesity * excessive alcohol intake * some illegal drugs |
Stroke risk factors you CAN'T control or treat: * Age - Although younger people are not immune to strokes, advanced age significantly raises your stroke risk. * Sex - Each year more women than men have a stroke. Women's risk rises sharply after menopause, but it remains lower than men's in the same age group. * Heredity - Some families have higher-than- normal genetic risk of stroke. African Americans are more likely to have high blood pressure than Caucasians and tend to have strokes earlier in life with more severe results. |
